Lyrics

Knitting women
used to fill the metro seats
I can hear the rhythmic flicks
the quick click click click clicks
Now they’ve been replaced by machines
and fingernails on cell phone screens
and that’s OK
You would have loved these days

I guess I miss the stitches slipping moments on your fingertips -
a rosary
I guess I miss the simple prayer on your lips you uttered so
tenderly

Knit knit purl purl
be kind be kind be patient
knit knit purl purl
be kind be kind be patient
we’re all connected

My little girl
She’s playing with a swatch I made
I watch the yarn, unravelling
back back back back back
through every knitter of the past
who cast a wish into the wool
and that’s OK
They would have loved these days

and will she miss the simple prayer on my lips I utter so
tenderly

Knit knit purl purl
be kind be kind be patient
knit knit purl purl
be kind be kind be patient
we’re all connected
You would have loved these days
You would have loved these days
